Very, very cheap. It is not as good as the original Rome, although it could have been. In its current state, it’s a beta. The battle AI is pathetically, laughably awful, and the campaign AI is passive and not very ambitious. I could go on and on about the AI, trust me when I say it is broken. The family tree system is non-existent. Generals and other characters are expendable, and you don’t grow fond of them, there’s no real incentive to keep them alive. Units don’t keep formation. There are constant rebellions and a lot of the buildings cause unhappiness and squalor, leading to massive frustration. Civil wars pop up out of quite literally nowhere, and with no warning. Usually a civil war means that suddenly one turn there are 12 fully stacked armies surrounding one of your cities (sometimes there are less armies, sometimes more). For example, I was playing as Egypt, and the civil war, for no reason at all, with no warning, broke out in Asia (random). Around 10 armies were suddenly surrounding one of my settlements, a long and boring fight ensued against tons of the AIs crappy units (levy spearmen and such, no quality troops, also, masses of slingers). It was dull, tedious, and unnecessary. Also, naval battles simply don’t work, it’s a numbers game that you have to auto-resolve. In addition to that, combined battles are broken. There are often not enough suitable landing zones on the beaches to unload your units, there are many flaws like this that seem small, but become massive when you’re actually playing the game. The graphics are good, but very glitchy, a lot of people with really powerful PCs cannot run the game. The game was rushed, and released in almost alpha form, seven or eight patches later, I felt like I was beta-testing, so I uninstalled it.
Oh, and you remember the video for the siege of Carthage they were showing off a while back?? It was completely fake, the siege of Carthage in-game is nothing like that.
I am very disappointed in Creative Assembly, and would like my money back.
