Cold weather can be acceptable if you put on enough clothing. There’s not much that can make a 100 degree 90% humidity day in Mississippi feel comfortable. What really got me into biking as an outdoors activity is that it’s one of the few outdoors activities you can do that gives you a natural breeze. But, I think a lot of people just walk outside, feel the heat, and then immediately walk back in to the air conditioning. I get people commenting on it when I take a medium long bike ride (~40 miles), as if it’s an unimaginable feet. I’ve actually had cars stop and give me a ride, apparently because they just assume that I can’t be doing it voluntarily (well, you can’t say Mississippians aren’t nice, I suppose…)
In all my time, I’ve come upon maybe one person who seemed like a serious biker (not just a kid riding down they’re block or something). I remember them, even though we just road past each other, specifically because I had never seen anyone before, and never since. I once road down the only bike trail in the area, a 30 mile trek to the coast, on a nice, beautiful spring day with mild temperatures and blue skies, through one of the larger cities in the state. I was the only bicyclist on the entire route.
