Not just population, but historical prowess. As an Indonesian I’ve always felt like my country is slightly neglected. I’m not blaming anyone, it’s just the reality of the situation. Everybody has heard of Genghis Khan, but how come not of Gajah Mada? Everybody has heard of the great European civilizations – but why not the largest Southeast Asian empire, the Majapahit? Historically a very rich and beautiful culture with a humongous sphere of influence that either directly or indirectly affected the entire world and not just the Southeast Asia region. Today, just as important. They are the world’s 4th most populous nation, but beyond that they are a G20 economy, a crucial balance beam between China and India, and one of Asia’s major pillars – not to mention the largest unified archipelago, each island full of a unique culture, stunning architecture, and a story to tell. Great beaches too.
